Using Worm Juice / Fertilizer In Your Organic Garden

If you have an organic vegetable garden, consider keeping a worm farm. Even if you live in an apartment and mostly container garden, keeping worms is a great idea. For one, you can feed your worms most of you kitchen scraps, which means that they are not going to land-fill. Secondly, they turn your waste into nutrient rich organic matter that your plants will just go wild with!

I keep chickens so most of my kitchen scraps go to them, but I like to keep worms as well. The product that worms make for you – worm castings – is quite different than chook manure. It’s good to bring as much variety in the way of fertilizers to your garden as possible.

There are a number of worm farm kits available at nurseries and hardware stores. Some department stores also stock them. You don’t have to buy a commercial kit though. You can take a look at my article on growing your own organic worms here, which gives simple steps to making your own worm farm.

The other great product you’ll get from your worm farm is worm juice. You need to keep your worms moist and when the juice filters through to the bottom of your kit, you can dilute it and use it on your organic garden as a liquid fertilizer.

I highly recommend keeping a worm farm if you want to give your organic garden regular pick-me-ups. And we could all do with them from time to time!

  2. Hi, I found your site and wanted to say “HI”. I was super excited to see your write-up about worm farming. How fun! I did that last summer with my boys – I kept a garden, chickens, and worms! I fed my worms dryer lint, food scraps, coffee grounds and newspaper. It was gross, goodness fun!
