Comfrey Has Many Uses In My Organic Garden

Comfrey is a wonderful herb to grow. It has multiple uses in my organic gardening “system”. Here are some of the ways I use comfrey:

  • I use the leaves as an activator in my compost heap
  • the chooks benefit from a few leaves being thrown into them to “self medicate” every now and then
  • The deep roots mine minerals from deep in the soil and help break up the soil
  • As a barrier to grasses encroaching on my garden beds (needs to be planted thickly)
  • Crush the leaves into a poultice to put on burns or grazes
  • Add a few leaves to a casserole (just a few – too many can be toxic)

Comfrey

This is a healthy plant that I divided and potted up from my main plant. Comfrey likes to be kept fairly moist. The leaves die down over winter, and push through again in spring.

It can be propagated from division, and even root cuttings.

I recommend anyone interested in organic gardening practices to get comfrey for their garden, propagate it so that you have plenty of plants and make use of it’s wonderful properties.

Happy Organic Gardening, Healthy Living…

Warmly,

Julie

  1. Great post and a great herb.

I guess I can add Comfrey to my list of herb to grow.

My wife and myself are just newbies at backyard gardening and have a lot to learn.

Would comfrey grow indoors as well. I really want to start with an indoor herb garden as well as herbs in our out side garden, once the snow decides to leave for a few months.

  2. Hi James,
I don’t know much about growing herbs indoors as our climate here is warm enough to grow most things outdoors all year round. My comfrey just dies down through winter ( we get the occasional frost, but never snow ), and grows back each spring.

I think that if you’re growing other herbs indoors your comfrey will be happy to grow with them. I’m assuming you’re going to use artificial light. Comfrey likes to be kept moist, but no plants like to have wet feet.

I hope this helps… just experiment anyway and let us know how it goes.

    Kind regards,
    Julie
