Seedlings Suffer In Really Hot Weather
Just a quick note today to remind you how important it is to really take good care of your emerging seeds. I’ve had some seeds in seed raising mix for a few weeks. They were coming on nicely – not all had come through, but the majority.
Then I had to work away from home for the weekend. I watered them before I left at 8am yesterday morning. It’s been hot here over the weekend 36 & 38C (about 98/99F). Tonight when I finally got home I went to check on them and some have perished.
It’s partly because the containers used to grow seedlings are very shallow and therefore dry out quickly. And also because seeds are sitting only just below the surface. If only I’d thought to put them in full shade while I was away – I’m sure they would have survived.
Most made it, but will be set back because I didn’t give it enough thought before heading off to work. But you know how it is – we always seem to be in a hurry.
Not to worry. I have plenty of seed and patience, fortunately. And raising my own seed is one of my very favourite things. ![]()
