Organically Grown Leeks – Healthy Root System
The photo below shows the very healthy root system of this leek from my organic garden. I don’t bother to mound the soil up around my leeks, because I hate the grit that has to be washed out before using it in the kitchen. So I just plant it, feed and water and in a couple of months have a healthy, organically grown leek ready for cooking.
As you can see, the root system is very healthy. Just for reference, the plant on the left of the leek is thyme (just coming into flower) and on the right is rosemary. I like to grow herbs right next to or in the veggie garden. It helps with my companion planting system.
I like to use leeks in stir-fry, soups and casserole type dishes. Lovely delicate flavour. If you’re new to organic gardening give them a try. They are so easy to grow, ask very little from you and have hardly any pest or disease problems.
Happy Organic Gardening,
Julie
