Keeping up the water in my Organic Garden through extreme hot weather

WOW!!! It’s 2008 already! So HAPPY NEW YEAR!

And it’s sooooo hot here in South Australia. Today is our third day in a row over 40C / 104F. It’s extreme days like this that I’m really happy that I plant my veggies close together and mulch. Even with these measures I have to water every day with these very hot temperatures – some areas of my garden have to be watered morning and evening. Cause there’s no point in growing vegetables that aren’t vital.

This can be quite time consuming unless you have done like me and have some kind of watering system in place. I use soaker hoses throughout my plots, which saves me a lot of time. I still need to move the main hose to each soaker hose in turn, which is a good thing because it means that I’m able to keep a close eye on how everything is going.

Also I pick things that are ready, so that they continue to fruit rather than go into decline. Anything that has gone to seed prematurely is pulled out and given to the chooks – which makes them very happy – and in turn they give me wonderful eggs!

So if you’re organic gardening in a very hot climate, make sure you keep the water up to your veggies to keep them growing vigorously. If you have any recipes for all my excess zucchinis I’d love to see them!

Happy Organic Gardening,

Julie
