Don’t let your veggies dry out in hot weather
WOW! The hot weather’s really moved in. There’s a far off cool change forcast, so let’s hope we get it.
There are some plants in the organic garden that you just can’t afford to withhold watering if you want to enjoy eating them. The two that spring to mind are lettuce and apple cucumbers. Without regular watering both of these vegetables will quickly go bitter and you won’t know it until you pick them and they are not pleasant in the mouth.
The only way to avoid this is to make sure they are never water stressed. If you want them to be delicious it helps to grow both of these plants vigorously. Using an organic mulch will help retain moisture in the soil for longer too.
So get mulching and give these plants particular attention during hot spells. Fortunately they like to grow together as they like similar conditions – something to be aware of in the planning stage.
Keep cool,
warmly, Julie

I have noticed over the past couple of years having our own backyard garden that mulch can really make a difference in the amount of watering that is required without mulching.
We also have shrubs and flowers that were here when we bought our home and we are slowly getting mulch around almost every plant.
Mulching gives us so much more freedom of time and of course we worry less about not doing a great watering job.
