Organic Gardening In My Poly Tunnel

Here’s a bit of an update on how our poly tunnel is coming on. It’s fully functional now – well for the sections that we’ve got benches for. My husband’s making them in his spare time… so it could be a while before they’re all made and in there. But I have got one great bench for my herbs and he’s got another (picture below) that has our lettuce growing hydroponically, with strawberries to be added to the side soon.

Nutrient Film Technology

This bench was made entirely from recycled galvanised water pipe. The plastic part that the lettuce sit in is rectangular pvc down pipe. The nutrient flows through the pipe, feeding and watering the lettuce, then drains back to the tank to be recycled. This form of growing uses up to 80% less water than growing in the soil. This photo was taken before it was completed – more photos coming up soon.

Poly Tunnel

The photo above is “my side” of the poly tunnel, with some herbs I’ve propagated so far. The plants love the warmth of the tunnel through winter – keeping the daytime temperature perhaps 10 degrees C warmer than outside temperature, as well as providing humidity.

I’ve just found a really interesting e-book on making money from your glass-house. If you want to make some cash from this wonderful hobby, check it out too Click Here! and let me know what you think.

Happy Organic Gardening, Healthy Living…
