Growing Garlic In My Organic Garden
I just love garlic – it’s one herb that I just couldn’t do without. It’s great in the kitchen as a base for just about everything I cook. It’s fantastic in the organic garden too. A great way to reduce pests on your plants.
This is the garlic I grew last season.
I’m writing this now because this is the time to plant garlic if you live in South Australia. Garlic needs to grow through the winter (providing you don’t have snow) to allow the bulbs to grow large.
Don’t mulch with anything other than compost, and even then only a thin layer as bulbs tend to rot if mulched over winter. It means that you’ll have to weed every now and then, but I think it’s worth it.
This is the harvest from just a couple of bulbs that I planted. I dug up the bulbs a few days after Christmas. Just wait until the tops die off before you dig them.
You’ll need to buy organic garlic if you want to grow your own. Commercially grown garlic is treated to prevent the bulbs from shooting. Plus who knows what other chemicals they’ve been subjected to when they were grown. So buy organic to be sure.
